E-mail lists have to be one of the best, and oldest, features of the
internet. An e-mail list is sort of like a private newsgroup. Only
people who subscribe to a list can send or receive messages from that
list. Lists can be devoted to particular subjects, such as Yiddish
language and culture, or particular readerships, such as people who
attended Camp X. Some lists are discussion lists, where all the
subscribers can post messages, while others are mail distributions where
only an editor can send messages. Some lists distribute each message
individually, while others group messages into "digests". Some lists
are moderated, some aren't. There are lots of possible configurations.
Technically, an e-mail list is just a list of names and addresses
managed by a list server. A list server is an automated server that
maintains the list membership, archives, and processes requests.
Every list has an owner (who is often the person who created the list
to begin with), and the owner handles most of the technical aspects of
list management so you don't have to worry about them. But you can send
your own requests to the list server to do things like subscribing
and unsubscribing from lists, getting list statistics, finding out which
lists live on that server, etc..
And from a very non-technical standpoint, lists are a great way to
meet people who share your common interests. And to expand your
knowledge of the world. I have put together this Listing of 468
Jewish E-mail Lists because there are so many wonderful Jewish
resources on the internet that people don't know about.
Shamash and Virtual Jerusalem offer the
majority of the Jewish e-mail lists out there. There are many ongoing
classes available, especially through Project
Genesis , and weekly divrei torah, daf yomi, ask-the-rabbi,
and many other good things. Most of these lists are free and provided
as a service to the community.
So look over this page, pick out some interesting lists, and
subscribe today. Enjoy!
Our "flagship" list, the Project Genesis LifeLine provides a weekly
Dvar Torah (an insight on the weekly Torah reading or an upcoming
holiday), information on Project Genesis lists and programs, and
news about other opportunities for furthering your Jewish
education. You need not subscribe to this list in particular - all
of our members receive this mailing unless they specifically
request otherwise.
Drasha
Rabbi Kamenetzky of Yeshiva of South Shore offers tremendous depth
into stories, medrashim, and parables about the weekly Parshah. The
entire family can now enjoy amazing and eye-opening insights on the
Torah portion.
Rabbi Yissachar Frand of the Ner Israel Rabbinical College gives a
weekly class in the Parsha to a crowd of hundreds every Thursday
night, in the Agudath Israel Congregation of Baltimore. This class
is based upon a transcription of his presentation.
DvarTorah
Insights on the weekly portion written by various Rabbis. Each week
a different Rabbi presents his Parsha insights. Rabbi Dovid Green
moderates this list.
Haftorah
The Haftorah is the additional reading from the Prophets or
Writings that follows the Torah reading on Shabbos and Holidays.
Rabbi Dovid Siegal helps us to concentrate upon the lessons
contained within these texts, which are all too often overlooked.
Ever decide later, "maybe I shouldn't have said that?" Ellen
Solomon leads this class on the Jewish attitude towards gossip.
[Warning: If you'd rather talk about your friends than learn
something Jewish, stay away!]
The Book of Job is one of the most cryptic in the entire Bible.
Rabbi Yitzchak Schwartz, Dean of Yeshiva Orchos Chaim, Jerusalem,
provides insight into this complex work, discussing each verse with
its implications and possible meanings.
The Sayings of the Fathers, with the commentary of Rabbi Yehuda
Loewe (the Maharal) a particularly deep Jewish philosopher of the
16th Century. This class is led by Rabbi Shaya Karlinsky, Dean of
Darche Noam Institutions, Jerusalem.
Rabbi Moshe Chayim Luzzato (acronym: RaMCHaL) was an outstanding
scholar and teacher of Jewish ethics in the 18th Century. His "Path
of the Just (Mesilas Yesharim)" stands out both as an introduction
to Jewish philosophy, and a guide for the person committed to self-
improvement. Rabbi Yaakov Menken leads the discussion and analysis.
More and more people worldwide are making the study of Jewish Law
part of their day. The Halacha-Yomi list makes it easy, with a
section of the Code of Jewish Law fully translated into clear
English, accompanied by a commonly accepted modern commentary.
Maimonides' famous Mishneh Torah, or review of the Torah, covers
the entire breadth of philosophical and legal topics that are the
foundation of traditional Judaism. Rabbi Yitzchok Etshalom teaches
sections of this work each week and invites discussion.
Find out about the Jewish Holidays! This class discusses upcoming
holidays, their meaning and significance. The Jewish calendar is
filled with a rich variety of special days, and Rabbi Yehudah Prero
explains a great deal about each one.
