The overall design of your site is critically important with regard to two particular and seemingly obvious categories.
Simplicity
You can have the greatest sales message, the most intriguing content, or the most fascinating photos. However, if a visitor can't find the buried treasure, the visit is a waste for you and your viewer.
Visitors viewing your site aren't drilling for oil. They want to see what you're offering as soon as possible. Site design should be structured such that a viewer can see anything with no more than three to four clicks of the mouse, from any point in your site.
Aesthetics
While few are fashion experts, most of us are sharp enough to know not to wear a bright green shirt with, say, pink accents. Sure, you would stand out in a crowd, but not in a good way.
