What About Graphics?

Lets say this up front, lest you get the wrong idea about what comes next:

Harrys Black Hole Graphics Are Our Friends.
Harrys Black Hole Anyone who doesn't understand the above two items in the context of site design is a dolt.

Now, with that said...

Unfortunately, many web designers fail to realise that bells, whistles and Java applets don't really do a whole lot to sell a product or convey meaning. Sure... they look nifty and can help grab surfers' attention, but a site's artistic or creative merit doesn't necessarily translate to a better-understood message.

Does this mean graphics are unimportant, or can be ignored in favor of concise, well-written prose?

BZZZZ... Wrong Answer.

While literary purists may disagree, the fact is that readers of web pages are strongly impressed by what are commonly referred to as "cool" graphics. Graphics play an important part in initially grabbing a reader's attention. However its the content that makes a user buy a product or get your message.

Sound like old news? Well, it is. If you're going to reinvent the wheel, you'd best have a compelling reason to do so. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of web designers trying just that. After all, the Web is an experimental medium, right? Only trouble is, its your money -- and public image -- they're experimenting with.

So what's the answer? As in many things, moderation is a key player: Don't overdo the graphics and applets. Those that are used should be picked and properly optimized for speedy display.
